Deadline broke the news of her casting and was later confirmed by Natalia through her Instagram account, where alonsgide a screen-grab of an article, she shared a statement.
✨🌀✨Magia es tener la oportunidad de darle voz a aquella mujer que me enseñó el poder y la fuerza detrás de mi propia voz. ••• Natalia Cordova-Buckley joins the voice cast of Disney Pixar’s “Coco” @pixarcoco as legendary Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. Originally from Mexico, for Cordova-Buckley this is a dream come true as Frida Kahlo has been an iconic idol to her. ••• ✨“I’ve been chasing the spirit of Frida Kahlo my entire life, so to be able to give voice to the woman that taught me the freedom and strength of my own, is not just an honor but profoundly magical!”. ✨ ••• The ensemble voice cast also includes Benjamin Bratt, Gael Garcia Bernal, Edward James Olmos and newcomer Anthony Gonzalez. ••• “Frida Kahlo is a captivating icon in Mexico’s history,” said director Lee Unkrich @leeunkrich . “Her art, strength and resilience inspired us in so many ways. Natalia’s role in “Coco” pays homage to Ms. Kahlo, her work and the people of Mexico who love her.” •Directed by Unkrich (“Toy Story 3”), co-directed by Adrian Molina (story artist “Monsters University”) and produced by Darla K. Anderson (“Toy Story 3”), Disney•Pixar’s “Coco” opens in U.S. theaters on Nov. 22, 2017. Thank you @carlahool for being an ambassador of my dream. Gracias! @fridakahlo #FridaKahlo #Pixar #pixarcoco #mexico #latina #proudlatina
Although her role has been described as a cameo, it’s clear that, for Natalia and more, Frida Kahlo is an important figure as, as director Lee Unkrich stated:
“Frida Kahlo is a captivating icon in Mexico’s history. Her art, strength and resilience inspired us in so many ways. Natalia’s role in Coco pays homage to Ms. Kahlo, her work and the people of Mexico who love her.”
Coco is not a film about Frida’s life, but about a young boy and aspiring musician, named Miguel, who ventures in the Land of the Dead on the Day of The Dead, or Día de los Muertos in spanish. Her cameo means that, most likely, she will make a post-death appearance in the afterlife.
What do you think about this news? Are you excited for Coco?
