J.J. Abrams Says Episode IX will Be Its Own Story: ‘We Have to Go Elsewhere’
We’ve still got to wait until December for the next installment in the Star Wars franchise, giving us more than enough time to speculate about possible things that could take place in the film. While it’s expected that there are some things that everyone would like to keep secret until the movie’s premiere, director J.J. Abrams wants to make it expressly clear ahead of time that while people made comparisons between The Force Awakens and A New Hope, that Episode IX will be its own, completely, original story.
The man behind the reboots of both the Star Trek and Star Wars film franchises spoke to a BBC radio program about his process behind creating Episode IX and how it would differ from The Force Awakens:
“Well, it’s certainly something that I’m aware of now working on Episode IX – coming back into this world after having done Episode VII. I feel like we need to approach this with the same excitement that we had when we were kids, loving what these movies were. And at the same time, we have to take them places that they haven’t gone, and that’s sort of our responsibility. It’s a strange thing – Micahel’s worked on things like Planet of the Apes and Star Trek and Star Wars, and these are the things of dreams. Yet we can’t just revel in that; we have to go elsewhere.”
The newest trailer for the film was released a little over a week ago and can be seen here.
