Fox has been hard at work trying to expand their X-Men universe on the big and small screens. Besides the widely successful spin-off films Deadpool and Logan, Fox has had some success with their TV projects so far. Their FX series Legion received positive reviews and is gearing up for season two while the premiere of new show The Gifted debuted with positive reviews as well. But not every idea makes it through to production.

Fox also had plans to develop a TV series centered around the villainous organization the Hellfire Club. The show would be called Hellfire and would explore the inner workings of the elite club full of wealthy one-percenters and mutants who have behind-the-scenes influence on worldly events. The show was scrapped late last year with no explanation until now.

X-Men producer Lauren Shuler-Donner gave a short and simple answer as to why the show was halted: 

“..it was too many characters and not enough depth of character..”

The Hellfire Club had their live action debut in X-Men: First Class with Kevin Bacon and January Jones portraying its leaders Sebastian Shaw and Emma Frost. The plot of the film showed the group pulling the strings concerning the Cuban Missile Crisis further showing how influential the group can be. Surely a TV series would consitute an expansive roster of characters and a complex storyline that the Fox creative team didn’t believe would work out. No plans have been confirmed if the show is just on hold or if its been canned for good.
