Social Media:  My Instagram is @Himebutt and my Youtube is MiDa cosplay!

What are your Favorite Movies, Television shows and Books?:

Some of my favorite movies include Captain America: The First Avenger, The Beatles film “Help!”, Moonrise Kingdom, Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, Scott Pilgrim vs The World, and Princess and the Frog.

I don’t watch too many TV shows (as if I’m afraid of the commitment to so many episodes) but I love Law and Order: SVU, The Flash, Stranger Things, and Riverdale.

My favorite books are Eleanor & Park, Submarine, All of the Batgirl comics, Water for Elephants, and a poetry book called “Rare Art and Cheap Wine”. My answers towards a question like this are always situational, all depending on which reality of mine I’m deciding to showcase.

What is are some interesting facts about yourself?

I used to be deathly uncomfortable with seals, I couldn’t look at pictures of them in large groups or go to beaches where they would lay around. Then one night I had an obscure dream where a group of seals took me to their secret cove and accepted me as an equal. Now I’m fully dedicated to loving seals.

Characters you have cosplayed before?

I’ll have to narrow this down because this list is unreasonably long. Some cosplays I’ve done are:

  • Captain America
  • Shego (Kim Possible)
  • Ariel (Little Mermaid)
  • Moana
  • Anna (Frozen)
  • Spider-Man
  • Sailor Mars
  • Hermione Granger
  • Velma
  • Harley Quinn
  • Josie Rizal (Tekken)
  • D.va (Overwatch)
  • Black Widow

What got you into Cosplay?

My mom actually forced me to cosplay when I was 12! She got tickets for Anime Expo and told me I couldn’t go unless I dressed up. Under my Pre-Teen angst, I was super excited and became hooked on the cosplay community aura. One cosplay became two, then three, then six and eventually I became fully dedicated to this hobby.

Do you face any challenges being a cosplaying woman of color? And how do you combat those challenges?

There as so many challenges to be tackled when you’re a woman of color in the cosplay community. I would constantly struggle with feeling comfortable as characters since none really shared my Filipino features. I could never categorize myself as any character. Eventually I began to embrace my individuality! Cosplay is about your passion and love for a character, and that will shine far brighter than comparison of looks.

Who are your favorite cosplayers?

It’s so hard to choose favorites because I love everyone, but my cosplay idol since I started has always been Jessica Nigri! She has so much energy and positivity to bring to the cosplay community. Other cosplayers I admire are @Gabriellecookecosplay, @mimisugars, @kawaiibrocosplay , @raekaebro, @daeunnc, and @soradorabl.e on Instagram!

What cosplays are you currently working on?

I’m currently working on a Female Aquaman In honor of the Justice League movie that is coming out soon! Another cosplay I’m working on is Padme’s Yellow Picnic dress from Attack of the Clones. I’ve been wanting to do that dress for two years now I’m incredibly excited to complete it.

If you could be any character (for cosplay or in general) who would you be and why?

If I could be any character I would want to be Barry Allen (specifically Ezra Miller’s interpretation.) I’m not sure if it’s because I want to be Ezra Miller or Barry Allen, but it’s probably a good mix of both. The Flash is my favorite superhero and just being able to be his be in his suit would be a life achievement.

Advice for people who want to get into Cosplay?

My biggest piece of advice is to love the characters you cosplay. Do not fall into the endless whirlpool of cosplaying to gain fame or popularity! It’ll make cosplay far from fun and more of a stress inducer. Do not compare your path in the cosplay community to other cosplayers, everyone’s growth and experience with it is different! Remember to have fun and spread positivity, because in the end, we are all a bunch of geeks in wigs and costumes.
