‘IT’ Now Highest-Grossing R-Rated Horror Film

Since its release, Stephen King’s IT has dominated box office records and now holds the crown for highest-grossing R-rated horror movie of all time, surpassing The Exorcist. It has already broken the record for biggest opener for a horror film ever, and also stands as the highest-grossing King movie of all time after less than a week.

IT is projected to pass the $233 million threshold, securing its place above The Exorcist. The 1973 horror classic made $232.9 million at the domestic box office, combining its initial theatrical run and re-releases.

Although IT stands as the king of R-rated horror films, it is not the top-grossing horror film of all time, all ratings considered. Stephen Spielberg’s 1975 summer blockbuster Jaws, only rating PG, grossed $260 million to date. M. Night Shyamalan’s 1999 illusive The Sixth Sense grossed $293.5 million.

With Halloween right around the corner, IT has all the advantages to surpass the $300 million mark, landing it the modern-day top slot among all horror films.

Do you think IT deserves the prestigious title over all the renowned horror classics? Let us know!

IT is now playing in theaters.
