‘New Mutants’ to be ‘Like a Haunted House Movie’ Says Fox CEO
20th Century Fox’s New Mutants movie has officially wrapped filming and the reports of it being unlike any other superhero movie we’ve seen before are still going strong. I mean, the New Mutants logo has blood splattered on it, what more do you need to hear?
Chairman & CEO of 20th Century Fox, Stacey Snider, spoke with Variety and had this to say in regards to the inevitable “superhero fatigue” Hollywood may soon face & how New Mutants will stand out:
“New Mutants is about these teenagers who are just coming into their powers. It’s like watching mutants go through adolescence and they have no impulse control, so they’re dangerous. The only solution is to put them in a “Breakfast Club” detention/“Cuckoo’s Nest” institutional setting. It protects the people on the outside, but it’s strange and combustible inside. The genre is like a haunted-house movie with a bunch of hormonal teenagers. We haven’t seen it as a superhero movie whose genre is more like “The Shining” than “we’re teenagers let’s save the world.”
The Shining meets mutants, eh? Those two little girls in The Shining did have a Stepford Cuckoos vibe now that I think about it! Shout out to the X-Men comic book fans that understood that terrible, terrible joke.

Here’s Johnny! Is he looking for the Professor?
Characters like Wolfsbane, Mirage & Magik all have powers with a latent darkness to them and were all kind of outcasts within a group of outcasts; it just doesn’t get any more X-Men than that right there. Honestly, introducing these characters in a haunted house-type setting seems perfect. It’s a gamble, but Fox was recently met with huge success in going against the grain with their most recent X-Men installments, Deadpool & the Academy Award contender Logan. What do you guys think about horror elements and themes being added into New Mutants?
The New Mutants drops April 13th, 2018!
