Darren Aronofsky’s unmade Batman Film Would Have Starred Joaquin Phoenix

During a press tour for his most recent film mother!, director Darren Aronofsky revealed that he had planned to give Joaquin Phoenix the role of Bruce Wayne in an unmade Batman film.

“I always wanted Joaquin Phoenix for Batman. It’s funny, I think we were just sort of out of time with our idea. I understood that [with] comics, that there’s room for all different types of titles, but I think Hollywood at that time was still kind of in the Golden Age of comics, and they were still just doing the classic titles in classic ways.”

The unmade Batman film would have been based on Frank Miller’s Batman: Year One, even bringing Miller on to co-write the script. In an interview last year, Miller told EW that Aronofsky’s “vision of Batman was darker” and that Miller’s Batman was “too nice for him”.

This film never came to fruition as Warner Bros decided to give the director’s helm to Christopher Nolan.
