‘Cowboy Bebop’ & ‘Samurai Champloo’ Director is Making a ‘Blade Runner’ Anime
Sony Pictures Japan has just announced that Shinichiro Watanabe, director of Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo will be directing a Blade Runner anime.
The anime is called Blade Runner: Black Out 2022, and is set shortly after the first movie, during a power outage caused by a “massive, destructive” EMP detonation. Sony Pictures Japan released a short preview of the anime, featuring some art stills, clips from Blade Runner 2049, and a voiceover from Watanabe.

The events of Black Out 2022 are intended to fill in some of what happened between Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049, coming out on October 6. In the clip, Watanabe says that Blade Runner influenced him the most in his career of making anime.
According to the announcement, this is only a short film, but with Watanabe directing, we can count on it being pretty intense. Blade Runner: Black Out 2022 will be released on September 26 on the Sony Pictures Japan YouTube channel.
