Beast hasn’t had an easy life in the X-Men franchise, first hating his mutation so much that he tried to “cure” it, failing miserably when it backfired transforming his mutation of big feet into the big blue beast we all know and love.
Although in the original trilogy, and in some scenes of X-Men: Days of Future Past, Beast was played by Kelsey Grammer, actor Nicholas Hoult is the face we associate the most with the character as he has been playing Hank McCoy since X-Men: First Class back in 2011.
The next instalment of the X-Men saga will be the upcoming film X-Men: Dark Phoenix, where Hoult is set to return as Beast, alongside Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, Evan Peters as Quicksilver, James McAvoy as Professor Xavier, Michael Fassbender as Magneto and Jessica Chastain as an unknown character.
The film has been confirmed, by director and writer Simon Kinberg, to be a retelling of the Dark Phoenix saga, but on a more grounded line than the rest of the franchise.
Not much more has been said about the upcoming film, but Hoult may have told us something more about the character’s arc in X-Men: Dark Phoenix.
At the Toronto International Film Festival, while promoting his new movie The Current War, Hoult told ET Canada that not only does the movie hasn’t wrapped filming but also that he is looking forward to something “very different”.
“It’s very different for Beast this time, and that was part of the appeal of doing the movie for me. Simon Kinberg, who wrote and directed this time, had great ideas for where he wanted the character to go, so I was excited”.
Even though he doesn’t elaborate with details of how things will be different for him, we know from the comics that he doesn’t particularly play one of the biggest roles in the Dark Phoenix saga, so we can only speculate what’s next for his character and how much will things change for him.
Whatever happens with Beast, all we can do is wait and see what’s next.
