$70 Million China Opening Pushes ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Past $800 Million Worldwide
One of the summer box office’s few success stories, Spider-Man: Homecoming, has continued its domination overseas.
The film’s $70 million China opening was the country’s third largest for a superhero movie. It fell behind other Marvel Cinematic Universe entries Avengers: Age of Ultron’s $115.8 million and Captain America: Civil War’s $93.6 million.
Peter Parker’s full introduction into the MCU now stands at $823 million worldwide, which makes it the sixth highest grossing film in the franchise. It’s just $40 million behind Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
Spider-Man: Homecoming stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker/Spider-Man trying to fight the evil Vulture (Michael Keaton) while trying to impress Tony Stark and balance everyday high school life.
It is also now the second highest grossing Spider-Man film, just behind Spider-Man 3.
Up next in the MCU, Peter will be seen fighting alongside The Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange and Black Panther in Avengers: Infinity War May 4, 2018.
Then Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 is scheduled for release July 5, 2019.
