Chloe Bennet Changed Her Last Name Because Of Hollywood’s Racism
In the early months of 2016, Agents of SHIELD actress Chloe Bennet revealed to the Daily Beast that when she changed her name from Wang to Bennet that her whole professional life was altered. Now, during this week after being asked a similar question by a fan, Bennet responded by basically saying that “Hollywood is racist” and that they wouldn’t cast her because she had a last name which “made them uncomfortable.” She was “culturally raised both American and Chinese” and is not something that can just be erased but had to change it so she could “pay her rent.”
Her heated response to this question isn’t surprising as many Asian actor and actresses have come out in support of Ed Skrein who turned down the role of Major Ben Daimo, an Asian-American character within the Hellboy mythos who was one individual in a long-line of Hollywood-based white-washing issues which range from Scarlett Johansson in Ghost In The Shell and Tom Hardy in The Dark Knight Rises and is something that the audience and minority actors have been advocating against since Mickey Rooney’s “yellow face” in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
