Michael B. Jordan To Produce Series on OWN Network with ‘Moonlight’ Writer

It seems that Oprah Winfrey is on the verge of making her network a pinnacle in original programming for television. In the early year’s of OWN’s creation, talks about the network going bankrupt was a headline on many entertainment sites but now its original programming is a regular trending topic on social media across the country. Show’s like Queen Sugar and Greenleaf are examples of the type of well written, artistic and heart-wrenching stories the OWN network is capable of telling.

Now, it has been announced that OWN will continue to expand its original programming roster by ordering a new coming-of-age drama series that was written by Academy Award winning writer Tarell Alvin McCraney and produced by Michael B. Jordan. The now untitled series will follow the life of a 14-year-old child prodigy who must grapple with being loyal to the streets that raised him or a higher education that can give him a way out of poverty, while dealing with the death of his best friend and relying on his hardworking mother to help improve their standard of living. The series will be set in South Florida after the end of the Obama legacy and is loosely based on McCraney’s own experiences growing up.

Check out what Oprah had to say about green-lighting the series:

“When Tarell shared his powerful story with us there wasn’t a dry eye in the room. I knew this was something special that our viewers will without a doubt connect to and feel compelled to explore with us. I am honored to be working with Tarell and the rest of the producers on this project.”

Jordan also weighed in on being apart of the creation of such a personal and enriching story:

“Being young, gifted and black in America today and anywhere for that matter makes it extremely hard and challenging to follow your dreams and achieve success. Tarell’s adaptation of this reality was so honest and true and it’s the exact message our youth needs today.”
