Following the wildly successful television adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods on Showtime, it looks like other entertainment providers are eager to capitalize on renewed interest in the prolific author’s work.

Amazon Studios has just announced that actors Michael Sheen and David Tennant will star in its upcoming adaptation of Good Omens, the classic collaborative novel by Neil Gaiman and the late Terry Pratchett.

Amazon previously announced the project in January of this year, and since then the fledgling streaming service has steadily revealed key production information leading up to today’s casting news. Good Omens will be adapted into a six-part series that will debut sometime in 2018. Similar to his serious involvement in American Gods, Gaiman has developed the script for the series and will serve as showrunner and executive producer.

Along with Amazon, the series will be co-produced by the BCC and several of its international studio branches, such as BBC Studios and BBC Worldwide, as well as the Blank Corporation and Narrativia, the production company of Rhianna Pratchett.

For those unfamiliar with this seminal work, Good Omens is best described as a satirical modern take on the biblical apocalypse. While the armies Heaven and Hell prepare for the Final Battle that will decide the fate of humanity, two friendly drinking buddies who don’t want the end of the world to come – fussy angel Aziraphale and punch clock demon Crowley – try their best to follow their bosses’  orders and take care of the Antichrist. Unfortunately for them both, they seem to have accidentally misplaced this important infant player just as he comes of age…

In the upcoming Amazon adaptation, Sheen will play the aforementioned Aziraphale while Tennant tackles the role of Crowley. For this reporter, the casting choice is ridiculously on point and surely signifies how good this adaptation will be.
