James Wan Updates Status of The Conjuring 3

With Annabelle: Creation now in theaters, and filming wrapped on the Corin Hardy-helmed The Nun spinoff, details concerning The Conjuring 3 are once again a hot topic. However, since the project is very much in its incipient stages, those involved do not have a whole lot to divulge. At the very least, though, James Wan, the man behind the franchise, recently offered an update on the film’s status.

“We’ve been working hard on Conjuring 3,” Wan told Entertainment Weekly. “Of course, that is something that I am not neglecting. The Conjuring films are still the mothership and the mothership needs to be strong. [Laughs] The mothership needs to be strong for all these other jet fighters to shoot out of. So, we’re in the midst of working on the script, and still hashing [it] out. We want to make sure that the script is in a really good place. With how much people have loved the first two Conjuring, I don’t want to rush in to the third one if possible.”

Doubts of Wan’s returning to direct the third film in the series’ mainline releases aren’t new by any means. And the director himself is willing to admit as much, citing a busy schedule as the primary reason behind his potentially not being behind the camera on the next go ’round. “I just don’t think it’s realistic with my schedule,” he noted. “I’m going to be on Aquaman for a year-and-a-half. I just don’t see that as a reality.”

As far as specific details about the plot are concerned, all has been kept under wraps. But  earlier this year, series producer, Peter Safran, did tell CinemaBlend The Conjuring 3 wouldn’t be another haunted house story like its predecessors:

“There are some [cases] that maybe aren’t as well known, but [the Warrens] spent a fair bit of time researching and were part of [them]. Clearly we can’t do another haunted house movie, right? We can’t do another supernatural possession in a house, with a family in peril. Right? So, it’s got to be something different than that, I think.”

What this may entail for the franchise going forward remains to be seen, but Ed and Lorraine Warren’s most famous case files will undoubtedly provide plenty inspiration.

The next film in The Conjuring Universe, The Nun, received its fair share of nods in the newly released Annabelle sequel and opens in theaters on July 13, 2018. Another spinoff, based on The Crooked Man, who debuted in The Conjuring 2 alongside The Nun, is also on the horizon. That film’s release is currently unknown.
