James Wan Talks About ‘Aquaman’

James Wan has had a run with films with big budgets. He has directed big hits for the horror genre with the Saw, Insidious and The Conjuring franchises, for the action genre with Furious 7 and now, he’s entering the superhero genre with Aquaman, starring Jason Momoa.

Heat Vision (part of The Hollywood Reporter) had a talk with the director about the upcoming movie for Warner/DC, and the first thing he addressed were the challenges he has had to face for shooting a film that’s mostly underwater:

“It’s a very technically challenging shoot to be on. Working with water, and even the dry-for-wet sequences are very complex. Our equivalent of two people sitting around chatting in the underwater world is super complicated. You have to think about CG with the hair, and how their clothing moves, how are they floating, what kind of rig we put them on and all that stuff. “

As he’s not a fan of relying too much on CGI, he’s trying to be with the actors as much as possible, which is making the film a tad more difficult to shoot.

“That just makes it very difficult and time-sucking and time-challenging to do all of this. So it’s not an easy shoot, but hopefully it will pay off in spades down the line.”

Earlier this year, it was revealed that Dolph Lundgren was cast as King Nereus, so Wan proceed to explain how such casting became to happen.

“When I was in the process of writing this character [King Nereus] in the world of Aquaman, a friend of mine, [director] Mike Mendez, was working with him on one of his films, and Mike was just raving about how great Dolph was. And I thought ‘Oh my god, Dolph would be great for this role as well!’ So, it kinda came about from that roundabout way.”

To Wan, Lundgren is a really good actor, who takes seriously every roll he takes part in.

“He’s a really strong actor. I don’t think anyone gives him enough credit for how serious he actually takes his craft. He’s taking it very seriously on this film.”

The DCEU is experiencing a really good time, with Wonder Woman being critically acclaimed and a hit at the box office, and for Wan, so much positivity is a good thing.

“Positivity in any way is always a good thing. So yeah, I think it’s great. I think when people are happy and excited, it helps the overall cause, you know?”
