It’s The Dark Tower vs. Dunkirk For Top Weekend Box Office Spot
The Dark Tower, which stars leading names Matthew McConehey and Idris Elba, opened in theaters on Friday and earned $7.8 million from over 3,000 locations and is expected to rake in a total of at least $19.6 million before the end of the weekend. Based off the series of books by Stephen King, many had high hopes for the film which centers around an eternal battle between Elba and McConaughey characters, the latter who is constantly trying to destroy the universe and the former, who is trying to save it. Even with less than stellar reviews, it’s box office performance is leading it to be #1 for its first weekend and there’s only one film in its way.
Dunkirk is Christopher Nolan’s take on the evacuation of allied troops from the French city of Dunkirk during World War II. The film stars Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh, James D’Arcy, and One Direction’s Harry Styles and has already grossed $300 million worldwide and currently holds a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, vs. the 18% that The Dark Tower currently has. If The Dark Tower were to divert from its current track and not live up to its projected numbers, Dunkirk will have claimed the top spot for the third week in a row.
