Season Six of ‘Arrow’ Will Break Diggle

Since joining Oliver Queen’s crusade to save Star City, John Diggle has suffered quite a lot of emotional and physical upheaval in his life.

He tracked down his brother’s killer and then made amends with him. His brother then turned out to be alive, but was unfortunately evil, so Diggle had to kill him.

He re-enlisted in the Army, where he was framed for murder and forced to live as a fugitive for the first half of season five. And let’s not forget Barry changing his daughter to a son during Flashpoint.

Apparently, all of that will pale in comparison to John’s physical and mental state following his survival of the Lian Yu explosion in the fifth season finale.

Actor David Ramsey spoke with press at San Diego Comic-Con about where Dig stands in season six.

“We have to break Diggle. I think Season 6 we’ll see Diggle get broken in a way he hasn’t been broken before,” said Ramsey. “It already starts in the first episode, and I think there’s a certain amount of it that will continue throughout the season. I think it’s an arc for Diggle that we haven’t seen, even beyond his brother coming back to life and killing his evil brother and that leading to the death of the Canary.”

They don’t always agree but Diggle’s loyalty to Oliver is one the things that keeps the team working.

The aftermath of the destruction of the island will have a major impact on John.

“The explosion profoundly affects Diggle, emotionally and physically,” he said. “In shadowing (director Greg Berlanti), I went back to the island and was shown what happened in the explosion. You’re going to really like what happens to Diggle.”

Ramsey also hinted that John may have his own secrets to keep in the upcoming season.

“We’ll find out his wife is part of that problem. Because she has her finger on the pulse of some of these metahumans and the Suicide Squad,” he said. “It’s our S.H.I.E.L.D. so to speak. He’s trying to bring some normalcy to his life, but being married to the leader of A.R.G.U.S., with more metahumans, even someone on the team, like Dinah.”

Arrow moves to Thursdays with its season six premiere Oct. 12 at 9 pm on The CW.
