Mads Mikkelsen Interested in Playing Doctor Doom for Upcoming Solo Film

With the recent announcement that a Doctor Doom solo film is in the works, Marvel fans have already eagerly expressed their interest in who will bring this classic comic supervillain to life on the big screen (in a way that does this iconic character justice – the recent Fantastic Four movies don’t count). While the list of potential actors to portray the titular character is still long and barely formed, there is one actor whose name stands out so far.

Coming off his recent successes in Hannibal and Star Wars: Rogue One, it looks like Mads Mikkelsen wants to play Doctor Doom – and this is a role he’s auditioned for in the past.

In an interview during last week’s London Film and Comic Convention, Mikkelsen was asked outright if he was interested in tackling Doom in the upcoming solo film and, if so, what about this new film attracted him. Mikkelsen had this to say about the opportunity:

“Yeah, it’s always interesting. They are experimenting with doing some of the villain’s stories as well. Let’s see if they do that. I’m not familiar that they’ve done it with anyone yet. They haven’t done it with The Joker [and] they haven’t done it with The Penguin. So we’ll see when that day comes.”

His response comes as a pleasant surprise, since he allegedly walked out of a previous audition for the role of Doctor Doom in the 2015 Fantastic Four reboot. He explained the reasoning behind his (smart) decision to opt out of the film as such:

“I didn’t walk out. When I left it, I was just like – this is crazy. I don’t even have long arms. What am I doing in here? The audition was only about long arms. No lines. I felt a little funny.”

He also laid out what characteristics he looks for when taking on villainous characters, which he seems to feel were clearly lacking in the Fantastic Four script:

“I hope that all characters have a little more rounded shape in the sense that they have two sides of the coin. Yes, they are villains. Hannibal is a baddie – but at the same time, we kind of like him. I think all characters – goodies or baddies, should have a little of both and I think that every actor looks for that in a character.”

To his credit, Mikkelsen certainly has the acting prowess and charisma to depict an intelligent and emotionally complex Doctor Doom. At the same time, some fans might not welcome the former Hannibal star due to his high-profile inclusion in the Marvel film Doctor Strange, where he played the admittedly one-dimensional villain Kaecilius.

However, considering both Michael B. Jordan and Chris Evans have also appeared in multiple heroic positions throughout the MCU – even portraying the same role in all those ill-fated Fantastic Four attempts – I’m sure no one will be really blame Mikkelsen for trading up and taking on a better role within the same cinematic universe.

What do you think about the idea of Mads Mikkelsen playing Doctor Doom in his upcoming solo film? Who else would you like to see in the role? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
