In an effort to bring The Flash back to its roots as a fun and lighthearted show, casting for season 4 has been a mix of new characters and old fan favorites. During this year’s San Diego Comic Con, it was revealed that Danny Trejo, Neil Sandilands and Kim Engelbrecht are joining the cast, while Britne Oldford is set to reprise her role as season 1 villain Peek-a-Boo for the premiere episode, The Flash Reborn.
Now, as we make our way to the show’s fall premiere, it has been announced that another new actor will be joining the show in a recurring role.
Hartley Sawyer, known for his work on YouTube channel Geek & Sundry and primetime comedies like Don’t Trust the B… in Apartment 23, has just been cast as Ralph Dibny. For those unfamiliar with The Flash comic book mythology, Dibny goes by a far more famous superhero title – the Elongated Man, a metahuman whose appearance on the show has been heralded since the first season.
In his comic book history, the Elongated Man is a member of the Justice League of America who gained the power to stretch his body (a la Mr. Fantastic) after creating a powerful serum from a rare Yucatan fruit. As a new citizen to Central City, Dibny quickly becomes a trusted friend and ally of Barry Allen, helping the Flash battle the forces of evil both with his superpower and an expertise in detective work that rivals even Batman.
With Barry currently trapped in the Speed Force, it’ll be interesting to see how the Elongated Man will be used in this upcoming season. He’ll certainly be an asset to the grieving Team Flash, and we will definitely see him tackle a mystery or two as this season’s villains, the Thinker and his right-hand man the Mechanic, are more cerebral and cunning in their nefarious schemes. Since Dibny will meet Barry for the first time this season as well, longtime comic fans should be excited to see one of DC’s most underrated bromances blossom onscreen.
Are you excited about this latest addition to The Flash? Since Sawyer is a somewhat unknown actor, how do you feel about him portraying this iconic comic character? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
The fourth season of The Flash will premiere on October 10, 2017 on the CW.
