Cate Blanchett Hopes to See More Female Villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe
Marvel have definitely been improving their villain game recently and Cate Blanchett is next in line to take on Marvel’s heroes in Thor: Ragnarok, she will play the Asgardian goddess of death named Hela. Fans were given a glimpse of her in action in the recently released trailer at SDCC and Cate Blanchett caught up with E! to talk a bit about the role.
On playing the first female Marvel villain she said:
“I didn’t realize… I was inhabiting the first female Marvel villain onscreen, I thought, ‘Surely not… well, no actually that’s true.’ There’s been many, many, many [female villains] in the comic books, but they’ve been a little tardy in bringing them to the screen, so hopefully there will be a lot more villainesses.”
Blanchett also mentions what drew her to the role as she reveals that snatching Thor’s weapon of choice really peaked her interest. “That had me at ‘hello’ actually,” Blanchett says, “I thought that was really exciting that they were prepared to destroy Thor’s power in the first few minutes. It’s a nice entrance.”
Indeed it is. Given Cate Blanchett’s legendary acting ability fans will be eager to see what she brings to the MCU, hoping she can build on Marvel’s recent success with Kurt Russell’s Ego and Michael Keaton’s Vulture.
