Iron Fist Will Mature in ‘The Defenders’
Still fresh off from last weekend’s San Diego Comic-Con, more developments are being released in regards to Danny Rand’s Iron Fist in the scope of Netflix’s upcoming The Defenders.
In an interview with the press at the annual convention in San Diego, Iron Fist‘s Finn Jones (Danny Rand) and Jessica Henwick (Colleen Wing) gave some insight into how Danny Rand will grow and develop during the new series.
Henwick starts by saying:
In Iron Fist, he’s just going through so much that he’s not presenting his best self. […] It was always a bit of a gender reversal in Iron Fist, in that Danny is kind of the ingénue… and Colleen is the Clint Eastwood, like, ‘I’ve been around too long and I don’t give a shit.’ She’s jaded and she’s tough and she doesn’t want let people in. So that was actually part of the appeal to me, that they had had that character swap. […] His growth on Iron Fist and then certainly going into Defenders. […] By the end of Defenders, he’s a whole different character! It’s part of the appeal, I imagine, of working with someone like Netflix, is that they give you that freedom to really evolve the character.
Building off of that, Jones added:
That’s the great thing about us all coming together, is that we really learn from each other. I think Danny definitely learns from all the other superheroes. […] One of the things he learns from Luke is how to just actually step down a notch — actually, no, not step down a notch, but how to really understand who he is a little bit better and really take his responsibility a bit more seriously. The fact I have this enormous power because I’m head of this company. […] I can actually use that in a lot more intelligent ways than just flashing some cash around or going and punching stuff.
The statements reflect the idea that Danny Rand is very new to being a superhero, and being thrown into The Defenders will help him come to terms with that and figure out how to grow. It’ll be a process of Danny Rand becoming Iron Fist.
The Defenders will drop on Netflix on August 18 and is an eight-part series featuring Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), and Iron Fist (Finn Jones).
