This past weekend at San Diego Comic-Con 2017, Marvel Studios made their mark in Hall H once again by providing long time fans with some actor panels and exclusive footage from their upcoming roster of films. Among those films was the highly anticipated third film in Thor’s solo film trilogy Thor: Ragnarok. A new film trailer was released worldwide giving fans a deeper look into what they can expect when the film hits theaters this Winter.

Karl Urban plays the Asgardian character Skurge in the film and while his character has been featured in all the film’s promo material, much of the character remains a bit of a mystery. While speaking with IGN, Urban gave a little more insight into what audiences can expect from his character and why Skurge chose to side with the villain Hela in the story:

“When we find Skurge he’s operating the Bifrost because Heimdall is missing in action and then pretty soon after that Hela shows up. Skurge sees the writing on the wall and has to make a decision whether to die or join her and his instincts of self preservation take over.”

Urban went on to explain that his character’s decision to betray Thor and his people, although purely for survival, will be the character’s “central dilemma” throughout the film. Fans of the comics will recognize these actions are very similar to the character’s comic depiction as his alliances and partnerships have changed many times on the pages. It seems Marvel has definitely made an effort to keep components of Skurge’s character canonical to his comic-book origins. What do you think of Karl Urban’s explanation? Are you excited to see Skurge do battle with Hela in Thor: Ragnarok? Let us know in the comments below.
