Despite the poor critical reception, accusations of cultural appropriation, and less than stellar behavior from cast and crew, it looks like Marvel is committed to expanding The Defenders franchise on Netflix no matter what. While this means we get to see new seasons of fan favorites like Luke Cage and Jessica Jones, it also means other members of the ensemble superhero team will continue to bask in the associated spotlight.
Specifically, it has finally been confirmed that Iron Fist will return to Netflix for a second season.
The announcement came from Jeph Loeb, Marvel Head of Television, during The Defenders panel at this year’s San Diego Comic Con.
Along with this announcement, Loeb hinted at an expanded cast in the second season. Notably, the newest character to appear seems to be Misty Knight, who first graced our screens during the first season of Luke Cage as portrayed by actress Simone Missick.
With Jessica Henwick presumably reprising her role as Colleen Wing in the upcoming Iron Fist season, Misty Knight’s inclusion suggests that the two characters will team up to form their iconic Daughters of the Dragon crimefighting team, which was their first comic appearances.
There is no official date yet for the second season of Iron Fist, but it should premiere sometime after The Punisher in 2017. At the earliest, we could see a late 2018 or early 2019 premiere, alongside the newest seasons of Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and Daredevil.
How do you feel about Danny Rand inexplicably coming back to Netflix for a new season? Are you going to watch the show to see if it has redeemed itself after a somewhat lackluster first season? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
Meanwhile, check out Rand and the rest of Marvel’s newest superhero team when the first season of The Defenders premieres on August 18.
