Ben Affleck Debunks ‘Batman’ Recasting Rumors #SDCC2017

One of the most highly anticipated panels is currently underway at this year’s San Diego Comic Con, and with it comes exciting news for Batman fans.

Not five minutes into the Warner Bros. panel segment featuring the entire cast of the Justice League, Ben Affleck came onstage to address yesterday’s rumors that he was going to be removed from the position of Batman in the DCEU. His response was short and sweet: he’s not going anywhere!

The salacious report that broke this recasting rumor came from Hollywood Reporter, which alleged that Warner Bros. was looking to replace Affleck following this year’s Justice League movie due to his age, weight and seeming lack of interest in playing the Dark Knight for future films.

Obviously, this has been causing quite a commotion online, and left many fans eager to see Affleck at today’s panel.

Thankfully he did not disappoint. Not only did he immediately express his continued enthusiasm for The Batman film – which, per his statements, he believes some people questioned after he stepped down as director – but he also sung the praises of new director Matt Reeves. Specifically, Affleck had this to say about his successor and the opportunity to work with him:

“I’d be a fucking ape on the ground for Matt Reeves, never mind being Batman! It’s incredible. I’m really blown away and excited. It’s a great time [to be] in the DC Universe… how many people in their life get to come to Hall H and say ‘I’m Batman?’”

Affleck also asserted that Warner Bros. still stood behind his talent and commitment to the DCEU in an interview with Entertainment Weekly later in the day. According to him:

“Kevin Tsujihara [Warner Bros. chair], Sue Kroll [Warner Bros. president of marketing and distribution], and Toby Emmerich [Warner Bros. studio chief] have said to me, ‘We want you to be our Batman.’ And you know, I believe them.”

It all sounds like pretty convincing to this reporter, at least as confirmation that we will indeed see Affleck reprise his role for a few additional DCEU films. However, don’t just take my word for it – you can watch Affleck’s full speech about the rumors immediately below:

Stick around with Geeks of Color this weekend for all the latest Comic Con news! And get excited to see Affleck and the rest of the Justice League on November 17, 2017.
