It seems The CW is officially getting out of the vampire business for a while. Creator/executive producer Julie Plec announced that the upcoming fifth season will be the last for The Originals.
The series is a spinoff of the recently ended The Vampire Diaries. It follows the trials and fights of the Mikaelsons, the original vampire family.
Despite the show coming off a creatively successful season four, the series has been low rated for its entire run, so it’s no surprise the network finally decided to pull the plug.
The producers may have expected the end was near, as the final episode of season four had the story and feel of a series finale. The season ended with the Mikaelsons being scattered across the Earth to avoid the all-powerful Hollow from reuniting. Young Hope Mikaelson had been enrolled in the school for supernatural children run by Vampire Diaries’ Caroline and Alaric.
Season five will return midseason and will feature a significant time jump,
The Originals returns to The CW in 2018.
