Disney Hires Vanessa Taylor for Aladdin Rewrites
Former Games of Thrones writer Vanessa Taylor will be working on the rewrites for the live-action adaptation of Aladdin. The script was originally written by John August, who the Charlie’s Angels films, and several Tim Burton films. August was coincidentally an executive producer for Disney’s The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, another Disney movie plagued with whitewashing and misrepresentation criticisms.

Taylor has scripted Guillermo Del Toro’s The Shape of Water, and co-wrote the 2014 adaptation of Divergent. With these screenwriters and Guy Ritchie at the helm, it appears Disney is not in the business of doing better than the animated film when it comes to respectfully representing the Arabian inspired story.
At D23 Expo Disney announced that Will Smith will voice and potentially do some motion-capture for Genie. Egyptian-Canadian actor Mena Massoud will play Aladdin, and controversially half-Indian half-British actress Naomi Scott was tapped to play the Arab Princess Jasmine.
Aladdin is set to start shooting next month in London, and Jafar and Iago are to be cast soon, hopefully the tom Hardy rumour was just nonsense.
