Despite the first awful attempt at a live-action Green Lantern film in 2011, the DCEU is making another go at adapting the character and his extraterrestrial comic history with Green Lantern Corps.

There’s been no real rush to move pre-production along considering the several other films in the cinematic lineup, so for the past few months the only confirmed information we’ve had about the project has been that writers David S. Goyer and Justin Rhodes are developing the screenplay, and that DC and its studio partner Warner Bros. are interested in having both Hal Jordan and John Stewart share the spotlight as the titular legacy character.

Those of us who grew up watching The Justice League cartoon are excited to finally see John Stewart come to life on the big screen, and Warner Bros. has reportedly been busy searching for an actor talented enough to fill these big shoes.

And according to Tyrese Gibson, it looks like he’s the man that the studio wants to play this iconic role.

Green Lantern

Gibson spoke about the situation in a recent interview with Syfy Wire. He has been notoriously desperate to play John Stewart since about 2015, when he and his followers launched a social media campaign featuring photoshopped images of him in the classic Green Lantern garb. After a brief hiatus, he began to shoot his shot on social media once more this past May.

When asked whether anything productive had come from his posts, Gibson had this to say:

“You know, I had a couple meetings at Warner about it… I just think that they’re still trying to figure out what the move is. I would love to officially confirm, but I can’t.”

This doesn’t mean that Gibson is a sure thing for the role, which he was quick to acknowledge:

“If they go in a different direction, I think they know what’s best for the movie, but the fans started this campaign, and all I’ve done is made use of my social media to let folks know I’m interested.”

He’s certainly not the only actor that Green Lantern fans are interested in seeing cast as John Stewart. Rumor has it that Moonlight star Trevante Rhodes has also been approached about the project, though he’s been equally coy about any discussions he’s had with the studio. There’s also talk that Warner Bros. is looking for an actor between ages 21 and 30 to play John Stewart, which opens the door for many undiscovered young black actors to snatch the role away from Gibson.

How do y’all feel about Gibson getting one step closer to being our new John Stewart? Are there any other actors you’d like to see in the role? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

Green Lantern Corps is set to premiere on July 24, 2020.

  1. Justin Cornwell would be a decent John Stewart with Michael Weatherly playing Hal

  2. If they’re going younger, I vote for Donald Glover.
