New Black Canary Costume Revealed for ‘Arrow’ Season 6
Many fans are impatiently waiting Season 6 of Arrow, but the newest reveal has settled the unrest for the time being. The costume for Juliana Harkavy’s portrayal of Dinah Drake has emerged and has everyone reeling.
The original Laurel Lance Black Canary, played by Katie Cassidy, is long gone, but the newest version of the heroine first appeared in Season 5 and aspires to be a Black Canary closer to the DC comics, which means her costume needed a little revamping.
Thanks to Entertainment Weekly, we got a first look at the leather-clad Dinah Drake, ready to suit up next to Team Arrow.
The costume bears less resemblance to both Sara and Laurel’s previous iterations, and instead shows off more of a similarity to Oliver’s outfits. The gloves, staff, and black leather are all quite familiar to the show’s aesthetic.
Producer Wendy Mericle has reassured fans that the new Canary won’t mean Laurel Lance will be forgotten. It is simply a debut of Dinah Drake as a new woman, eager to join Arrow’s vigilante team and leave her police officer past behind. In her interview, Mericle explains their decision to wait until the new season for her debut:
“Last season, she wasn’t a full fledged superhero, you could say. She was, she had this power, she had this ability, she was part of the team, but really what this costume signifies more than anything is that she is now a full-fledged member of the team. She was before. But she’s now owning it in a different way. We had talked about having the costume at various points last season and it never felt right. It felt that we wanted to save it for a special occasion, and the premiere seemed like a really good place to do it.
“She needs something tactical. She has this meta power, but she also has the bo staff, so we just felt it was right for her to have something that was definitely more than a nod to the DCU character, but also something that was distinctive from what we’ve seen before. This really fits the bill. Maya Mani, as usual, did an amazing job with it. My favorite part is actually the subtle hint of the gold and yellow lines in it.”
Season 6 of Arrow premieres with “Fallout” this October 12th on the CW.
