The Overwatch League is a bold bet from Blizzard to try to get the sport of gaming mainstream and in front of a whole new audience. This kind of approach to e-Sports has never been done before, and Blizzard is making sure that this is taken very seriously. According to an ESPN report Blizzard is looking for a 20 million dollar buy-in from each team owner (you know, in case you were trying to form a squad). Blizzard also announced a couple of team owners that have already signed on which included some pretty big names including Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots, who has the rights to a Boston based team. Another big name included Jeff Wilpon, the COO of the New York Mets, who will be assembling a team for the New York franchise.

According to Blizzard a lot of research went into the formation of the Overwatch League and it shows in the scale and uniqueness of the idea. I haven’t heard of anything quite like this. The fact that the Overwatch League is being modelled after major professional sports leagues is very exciting! I can’t wait to see how this idea plays out over the next few years. There are six teams currently signed on and personally I would keep a weathered eye on e-Sports. I feel like it is going to show even more growth in the near future.

Now to just go find 20 mil so I can form a team in Memphis.
