Daddy Yankee Crowned #1 Spotify Artist, First Latin Musician To Have the Title

So I don’t know if you’ve heard, but there’s a little song that’s been going around called “Despacito” and it’s a bonified BOP. From the minds of Luis Fonsi and the legendary Daddy Yankee, you probably haven’t been able to go to any party this summer without hearing “Despacito” at least once. The song is just another successful hit for Daddy Yankee and I’m sure we all have fond memories of jamming out to his songs in the early 2000s (Gasolina still bangs ya’ll). The artist has never really disappearred, blessing us with songs when we least expect it and this newest track has only succeeded in building his already incredible music momentum.

Daddy Yankee has just passed Ed Sheeran as the number one most listened to musician on Spotify with over 44,735,586 monthly listeners and he is the first Latin artist to ever claim the top spot.  Speaking to the Associated Press through an email, Daddy Yankee had this to say:

“Being the first Latin artist to reach #1 in Spotify marks a precedent not only for my career but for the industry in general. The musical digital revolution has unified the world, and this is the proof. We are all in the same boat with no labels or stereotypes.”

Born Ramón Luis Ayala Rodríguez, the Puerto Rican musician started his career over 20 years ago and when discussing those who doubted him he put it simply: “I never stopped. I had to keep fighting. I had to make big sacrifices, to miss important moments with my family, to feel the prejudice of many people that didn’t open the doors for me.”
