Netflix’s ‘Dear White People’ Renewed for Season 2

After the shock cancellations of Sense8 and The Get Down, fans of Dear White People were on edge, will it get a second season? The show had garnered a lot of attention, positive and negative, for its provocative style and fans were worried that Netflix may collapse under the pressure and order its cancellation. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case, Netflix has confirmed its commitment to the show’s message and renewed Dear White People for a second season.

Based on the film of the same name Dear White People is written and directed by Justin Simien. The show centers a group of students of color at a predominantly white Ivy League University who face social injustice and vow to challenge it. The narrative uses a mix of satire, irony and biting social commentary to challenge existing social structures that victimise the minority students at the University. Netflix has ordered a ten episode second season and production is slated to begin later this year.

Yvette Lee Bowser will return as the showrunner for season two.  The creator Justin Simien will return as the executive producer along with Stephanie Allain and Julia Lebedev.
