The Spider-Man Sequel to be the Civil War of Phase Four
Information on Marvel’s post-Avengers 4 plans are scant. The Spider-Man: Homecoming follow-up is expected to kick off the MCU’s Phase Four, but there’s very little else to go on.
Between Homecoming’s release this summer, and the sequel’s launch in 2019, the world will see plenty more of Tom Holland’s web-slinger. Next year, he’ll hit the screen in Avengers: Infinity War, before joining the team again in the May 2019 release of the untitled Avengers 4. That July, the MCU’s second Spidey film will open in theaters, and it’s supposed to essentially be Phase Four’s Civil War. However, that does not mean the sequel will be packed with heroes akin to the third Captain America outing. Instead, as Kevin Feige explains, it’s meant to usher in the next phase following the world-changing events set to occur in the fourth Avengers.
Talking to io9, Marvel Studios president, Kevin Feige, revealed the following:
“So much happens in [the 3rd and 4th Avengers movies], as you can imagine, and so much is affected by it that we felt what better person to hold your hand and lead you into the next incarnation of the MCU, in a grounded, realistic manner, than Peter Parker?” Feige said. “So, coming out two months after Untitled Avengers, [that’s what] much of what the next Spider-Man film will be about.”
Feige continued:
“It was purposefully done like this. Like how the events of Captain America: Civil War impacted Peter as he was dropped off by Tony and expected to go back to continue his sophomore year, how the hell are the events of Infinity War and Untitled [Avengers] going to affect him as he, yes, goes back to his junior year?”

Feige’s comments seem to indicate the next Spider-Man film will mark a turning point for the expansive universe. Said turning point could be in relation to both Peter Parker’s personal tale, and the rest of the MCU’s cast of characters. We’ll be left in the dark on that front for quite some time, but Feige says Marvel Studios’ creative team already knows how Spidey’s second outing will pan out.
“Much like, as we went into Homecoming, we knew all the general pillars, you then need the magic of the writers and directors to bring it all to life. So we’re in that same position and we’ll actually start putting pen to paper on the next Spider-Man film in the coming weeks once this film is finally released. But we do know the specifics and the time line.”
As noted above, the wait for details will be long. According to Feige, Phase Four news beyond the Spider-Man sequel shouldn’t be expected until after the fourth Avengers movie hits theaters.
Spider-Man: Homecoming opens next month on July 7. May 4, 2018 marks the release of Avenger Infinity: War. The fourth Avengers is slated to arrive May 3, 2019, followed by the Spider-Man sequel’s July 5 opening, which will usher in Phase Four.
