Dan Harmon Confirms ‘Rick and Morty’ Season 3 Is Still Coming This Summer

Rick and Morty first hit our screens in the December of 2013 and it quickly became a hit show garnering universal critical acclaim. Of course with any show that gets such a loyal fan base so quickly therein grows an invisible clout of pressure on the creators to make more and make better. It seems like that pressure is playing into the delays for co-creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland.

Dan Harmon tweeted on June 23rd that the show is on track to release in the summer of 2017 so that’s the good news.

Anyway, season 3 is coming, we took too long writing it, they’re finishing drawing it, it’s coming, AS said summer, that’s real, press covfe

However, in a drunk tweeting spree on June 24th Harmon went on to explain some of the misconceptions and rumours flying around regarding the reasons for the delays and here’s what he had to say:

The reason S3 took long is because it took long to write, because it was S3 of a show that we were scared to make worse than S2 or S1. It’s a common yet odd phenomenon. Tail-chasing, perfectionism, overthinking? One prob is that any description you pick for it. Is going to have a falseness. If I say “we overthought” someone else could say “well, no, we thought the right amount,” it’s like talking about religion or something. It feels I think, to writers, sacreligious and ineffective to open the creative process and poke and label.

He continues on to reassure fans to not be worried about it being ‘overthought’ and potentially losing better ideas through revision since:

the reason overthought slows you down is, you just do way more versions of stuff than needed. You usually end up back where you started. So as far as I can tell, although I’m too close to it, it’s just another good season of RAM

Whilst making it absolutely clear that there has been no feud between himself and Justin Roiland:

As I speak, more articles are coming out about me and Justin fighting. Because it’s a less boring reason for a season to take long, and because I’m Dan Harmon, so it’s a smart fucking first guess, it just happens to be hilariously not true even in the slightest. If you do know of me at all you know that if Justin and I HAD ever fought, not only wouldn’t we be able to keep it secret, We’d be all too eager to share it with you. Also, that’s not what would make the show slow down! Fighting probably would have been a good idea, it might have sped us up.

I’m sure many fans are glad we got the season 3 premiere episode early because it cleared up the cliffhanger that left so many people on edge at the end of season 2; the show is in a great place in terms of story and the delay definitely won’t affect that.
