X-Men’s Iceman Gets His First Ongoing Solo Series
As the second week of Pride begins, Marvel Comics has released ICEMAN #1, their first ongoing solo series with a gay male lead.
The series follows Bobby Drake, one of the original X-Men. In this inception, Drake is younger, and more “put together,” according to the issue’s description. He’s also more comfortable with himself, and his sexuality, and is even dating an Inhuman.
Though Iceman mainly served as comic-relief in earlier series, Drake has matured since Young Bobby came out as gay in 2015.
The decision for his first solo series to come out during Pride Month, celebrated every year in June to honor the 1969 Stonewall riots, was a great touch.
However, there’s been little to no press from Marvel for this groundbreaking new series, which is disappointing, especially when Marvel has been known to cancel their more diverse series because of “low sales.”
ICEMAN is written by Sina Grace (Burn the Orphanage, Self-Obsessed) and drawn by Alessandro Vitti (SECRET WARRIORS).
