David Harbour Talks Complexity of Playing Hellboy in Upcoming Reboot
If you hadn’t yet heard, it was annouced last month by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola that everyone’s favorite demon superhero would be making his way back to theaters in a newly revived and Rated R reboot. Dark Horse Entertainment This time the titular character will not be played by Ron Perlman however, who brought him to life on the big screen back in 2004. Instead Hellboy will be played by David Harbour of Stranger Things fame.
The actor recently sat down in a interview with Yahoo! Movies to discuss the upcoming film where he talked about playing such an intricate character:
“Hellboy is very rich. I think the films did a certain thing, the comics do a certain thing. Hellboy is kind of a neurotic, messed-up individual who’s destined for a horrible fate. He’s destined to become the beast of the apocalypse. Whenever he shows up and does the right thing, people throw beers at him and show up with pitchforks and he still manages to do the right thing. I think it’s funny and it’s sweet and it’s weird, and hopefully I can bring that to it as well.”
The rumored title for the film is currently Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen. and it will be directed by The Descent‘s Neil Marshall and written by Andrew Cosby, Christopher Golden and Mike Mignola.
Cosby stated in a recent interview that we can expect a “darker, more gruseome version of Hellboy”, stemming from the director’s want to “walk a razor’s edge between horror and comic book movie, which was music to my ears, because that’s what I was shooting for in the script, and precisely what Mignola does so well with the comics.” It will be produced by Dark Horse Entertainment and there is currently no offical release date.
