David Simon’s seminal series, The Wire, remains one of the most talked about shows in television history. Its exploration of the narcotics crime scene in Baltimore ventured into the perspectives of the police and drug pushers, while providing commentary on the social and political issues still plaguing our society nearly a decade after the show’s finale. Since then, Simon’s fingerprint has been seen in other HBO series, namely Generation Kill, Treme, and Show Me a Hero. He’s returned once again to take viewers on another crime-drama ride. This time, Simon and co-creator, George Pelecanos, are using the 1970s as a backdrop. The topic of interest? The rise of the porn industry. Check out The Deuce’s first promo trailer:

Starring James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal, The Deuce takes place in New York during the 70s and 80s. Aside from its two leads, HBO’s latest will also feature the familiar faces of several The Wire alum: Gbenga Akinnagbe, Chris Bauer, Lawrence Gilliard Jr., Anwan Glover and Michael Kostroff. An official synopsis and first look images can be viewed below:

“Created by George Pelecanos and David Simon (The Wire) and starring James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal, The Deuce follows the story of the legalization and subsequent rise of the porn industry in New York’s Times Square from the early 1970s through the mid-1980s, exploring the rough-and-tumble world at the pioneering moments of what would become the billion-dollar American sex industry.
