While celebrating its one-year anniversary, Blizzard continues to release more for Overwatch.  Three new maps, several skins, emotes, and stickers were recently released for the anniversary event, but now a brand new map has just been announced.

Check out Overwatch‘s released video of the new map here:

According to Overwatch, the new map is called Horizon Lunar Colony and is the newest Assault map set on a moon colony.  A brief description and background of the map is as follows:

Built as a first step towards humanity’s renewed exploration of space, the colony’s goal was to examine the effects of prolonged extraterrestrial habitation—on human and ape alike. The scientists’ research proved incredibly promising…until, suddenly, all contact and communications with the base were lost.

A while ago, Overwatch did release an animated short focused on Winston and his backstory.  There, we get a flashback of young Winston and his human companion and scientist, Dr. Harold Winston.  Together, they resided on what appeared to be a colony on the moon.  You can watch that short titled “Recall” down below.

So, after a little over a year since the short’s release and teasing with the moon base and what exactly was its purpose, Overwatch has given us a piece of that puzzle.  Even in the teaser video announcing the new map, we can see many things reminiscent of Winston and Dr. Winston such as the the gorilla’s favorite snack (peanut butter) and the framed photograph of the two.

Horizon Lunar Colony is now available for play in both quick play and competitive mode on the PTR (public testing region) servers for players to test.  No word when it will be widely released into the game mode, but developers typically have maps and characters in the PTR for just a few weeks before sending them out onto PC and consoles.

Are you excited for this new map?  What do more you think we’ll learn about the moon base?  Tell us your thoughts in the comments below!
