John Boyega Talks Finn’s Journey in ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, John Boyega reveals some details about Finn and his journey in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
In the article Boyega explains how he trolled fans by insisting Finn is asleep throughout the whole film, but of course that isn’t the case.
In The Force Awakens Finn is badly injured from his fight with Kylo Ren.
“Finn’s in a bad way at the end of VII. He has a lot of issues. He got slashed with a saber, and that took him down real hard, so he’s in a coma,” the actor says. “That suit, that whole thing helps him to recover. But we’re not sure whether that means he’ll wake up.”
Boyega elaborates and says that Finn will need help in his recovery after waking up. Perhaps some enhancements are required. Boyega says it is an injury that “grounds” him, and the he needs help to get “mobile”, and that he is “walking wounded”. The damage may prevent Finn from engaging in action, and he may be at risk of losing the ability to walk. The damage is critical because he was hit with a lightsaber.
“Once it’s in, it continues to burn the skin and the cells. It’s not a piece of flame that whacks your body. It’s not something that works like a stab wound. It’s really brutal,” the actor says.”

Finn will be paired up with Rose Tico, played by Kelly Marie Tran, in this instalment. Rose is a Resistance mechanic, and it is safe to speculate that she may be involved in Finn’s recovery.
“It’s Finn and Rose, they’re on a massive adventure. It’s a big mission they need to complete,” Boyega says. “The Resistance is under immense pressure, and it’s time for them to get a bit of help. That’s where Finn and Rose come in, and they’re thrust into a crazy adventure.”
Rian Johnson has stated that Rose is crucial to the film and is in fact a lead character. So she may be heavily involved in Finn’s recovery storyline. In the Vanity Fair spread, Johnson reveals that Finn and Rose are on a mission behind enemy lines.
It will be interesting to see how Finn and Rey fair when separated, and to see their journeys take radically different turns. Rey appears to be getting stronger and a force to be reckoned with, and Finn seems to be struggling to get back to 100%. This is certainly gonna be the darker entry to the new Star Wars trilogy, and we should prepare ourselves for some emotional scenes!
Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be released December 15th
