Jordan Peele on Why He Won’t Be Directing ‘Akira’

After the astronomical success of suspense-thriller, Get Out, Jordan Peele has become one of Hollywood’s most sought-after directors.

We reported previously that Peele was being courted to direct the Warner Bros. adaptation of the 80s manga and anime film, Akira. However, Peele opted to bring more of his original visions to life with Universal Pictures and Blumhouse.

Speaking with Blumhouse while promoting the Blu-Ray/DVD release of Get Out, the writer-director said:

AKIRA is one of my favorite movies, and I think obviously the story justifies as big a budget as you can possibly dream of. But the real question for me is: Do I want to do pre-existing material, or do I want to do original content? At the end of the day, I want to do original stuff.”

How do you feel about Peele not directing Akira? Be sure to let us know in the comments below.

Universal Pictures has a first-look deal with Peele and he stated his intentions are to make more films about ‘social demons‘ in the near future, continuing along the lines of Get Out.

Get Out is available now on Digital HD and will be available to own on Blu-Ray/DVD on May 23.
