The time has come for every television network to cancel shows that are running out of steam and to find new shows in the sea of pilots being presented for pick up. The ABC network has made it first announcement of pick ups from pilots that were produced by the network’s own ABC Studios. Among those shows are Daveed Diggs produced comedy The Mayor starring Leah Michelle, the sci-fi drama The Crossing starring Steve Zahn, a drama starring Jason Ritter titled The Gospel Of Kevin and a new drama coming from the Prime Time Queen herself, Shonda Rhimes, entitled For The People.
With the announcement that Scandal will be cancelled after its seventh season, it’s nice to know that Shonda still has some awesome ideas up her sleeve. What can we expect from these shows? Well, let’s explore their plots a little to see if we have found a new series worthy of a binge.
The Mayor is a story about a struggling rapper named Courtney Rose who has been itching for his big break for years. Tired of making beats in his closet, he comes up with the publicity stunt to end all publicity stunts by running for Mayor in order to expose the world to his artistry. Things take a turn for the worst when he actually wins the Mayoral election. Now, he is forced to set his ego aside and be the leader his city needs. The show is executive produced by Tony Award winning actor Daveed Diggs.
The Crossing is a science-fiction drama about a group of people seeking refuge in a small town after fleeing their war torn country. But there’s a twist. The country they are fleeing is America and the war hasn’t actually happened yet but will take place 250 years in the future. Here’s a teaser:
The Gospel Of Kevin centers on Kevin Finn who travels back to his home town to be with his widowed twin sister and his niece. He hasn’t had the best of luck in life but things take a turn for the better, or for the weirder, when God appears to him and tasks him with saving the world. The Gospel Of Kevin stars Jason Ritter, JoAnna Garcia Swisher, and Chloe East. Paul McGuigan (Push, Lucky Number Slevin) directed the pilot.
Finally, Shonda Rhimes plans on adding another series to her growing roster of Shondaland projects with For The People, a drama set in “The Mother Court” better known as the United States District Court in the Southern District of New York. The series will follow the lives of brand new lawyers who are the defense and prosecution on the most high profile federal cases in the country and how their lives intersect in and out of the courtroom.
