With the release of Alien: Covenant just around the corner, director Ridley Scott is discussing what’s next for the venerable franchise.

There were reports that he was making a prequel trilogy that would lead into the original films. However, the disappointment of Prometheus may have tempered those expectations. Now, he’s just thinking about the next chapter after Covenant.

“I’ll probably be filming it within a year,” Scott told Yahoo Movies. “It’ll be out within a year and nine months. It’s weird when you’re writing, doing, planning, thinking about franchises, it’s amazing how it opens up and starts to evolve.”

Alien: Covenant has received rave reviews and the trailers have signaled a return to the gory thriller that fans have obsessed over since they first saw the original.

Scott attributes this to changes he made based on Prometheus feedback.

“What changed was the reaction to Prometheus…which was a pretty good ground zero reaction,” said Scott. “It went straight up there, and we discovered from it that the fans were really frustrated. They wanted to see more of the original monster and I thought he was definitely cooked, with an orange in his mouth. So I thought, ‘Wow, OK, I’m wrong.’”

Alien: Covenant stars Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup, Danny McBride, Demián Bichir, Carmen Ejogo, Jussie Smollett and opens May 19.
