‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ Rakes in $56.3 Million on Friday

The sequel to the MCU fan-favorite, Guardians of the Galaxy brought in a huge tally on it’s opening Friday, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 made $56.3 million on Friday, playing in 4347 theaters. This means the film is on pace to have an opening weekend total somewhere near the $140 million mark at the North American box office.

This potential total is more than the first film in the franchise and on Thursday night, it made $17 million in preview screenings, compared to $11.2 million in preview screenings for its predecessor back in 2014.

James Gunn is back to direct GoTG Vol. 2, with the returning cast of Chris Pratt as Star Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Vin Diesel as Baby Groot, Dave Bautista as Drax, Bradley Cooper as Rocket Raccoon, Karen Gillan as Nebula and Michael Rooker as Yondu.

The film also features notable new characters like Mantis, portrayed by Pom Klementieff, Ego played by Kurt Russell and Elizabeth Debicki as Ayesha.

The movie was released overseas last weekend and through Thursday, has already made an impressive $167 million.
