Daniel Jose Older’s young adult fantasy novel, Shadowshapers has been optioned by Anika Noni Rose and her production company, Roaring Virgin Productions.

This marks the second work by Older that Rose has optioned, the first being Bone Street Rumba back in 2015.

Named New York Times Notable Book of 2015, Shadowshapers focuses on Brooklyn-native, Sierra Santiago. She discovers a form of magic called shadowshaping, which imbues ancestral souls into paintings, music and stories. But when someone begins to kill the shadowshapers, Sierra becomes the killer’s new target.

Rose had nothing but high praise for the book and its heroine. She told deadline:

Shadowshaper was a book I couldn’t put down. At a time when so many are feeling powerless, Sierra Santiago is a young Afro-Latina heroine who finds her power within herself. Through a strong spiritual connection to her ancestors, the discovery of the magic living in her art, and with the help of some amazing friends, she saves her family, and her Brooklyn neighborhood from certain destruction. A face and culture we rarely see on screen; she is the heroine we’ve been searching for, only to find she lives right next door.”

A second book in the series titled, Shadowhouse Fall, is set to be released this September.

For more Anika Noni Rose, she will be starring in Everything, Everything  coming out May  19 and just finished filming for the upcoming, Assassination Nation.
