‘Black Panther’ Boasts “The highest-class cast we’ve had on a first movie,” Says Kevin Feige
When Marvel opened up its doors to press last week, one of the most-anticipated reels was for Black Panther.
Directed by Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station, Creed), wit an all-star cast that includes the return of Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa/Black Panther, Danai Gurira as Okoye, Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia and Michael B. Jordan as the villanous Erik Kill monger (check out the entire cast breakdown here).
As if we weren’t already excited enough for 2018’s Black Panther movie to his the MCU, Marvel Studios President, Kevin Feige, is giving us even more reasons to get hype about the film.
During an interview with Vulture, Feige revealed, “I’m not sure we’ve ever shown raw dailies before”. Which is great news for us because it shows that Feige is extremely confident with the work of the cast and crew thus far. But come on, were there really ever any doubts?
When asked why he chose to jump the gun and reveal some of the raw footage, Feige replied with, ““I think it’s two things. Black Panther is a huge part of the Marvel Comics mythology, and has been for 50-plus years. Other than his awesome, relatively brief appearance in Civil War, his history has been relatively untapped.”
In continuation, Feige raved about the cast. He told Vulture, “Every day, seeing that cast come together … it’s just amazing. Across the board, it’s the highest-class cast we’ve had on a first movie.”
Feige also reminisced about calling the film’s titular star to let him know the role of Black Panther was his, should be want it. He said, “You always like your instincts being validated, and Chadwick was the first choice for us. He was the only person we ever talked to about the role, and one of the highlights of my career was calling him out of the blue on a speakerphone with [Civil War directors] Joe and Anthony Russo and our executive producer Nate Moore, who’s now executive producer of Panther. I said, ‘Have you ever heard of Panther? Would you want to play him?’”
Black Panther will be Marvel’s 18th film and it will be a cast and crew that is almost entirely people of color. Feige said this is one of the film’s most unique and poignant parts, “It’s really exciting that this part of the universe is so unbelievably diverse and looks unlike any of the other films that we’ve made. The cast looks different than any of the other casts that we’ve had. Both in front of and behind the camera, it’s almost entirely people of color, which I think is a special, important thing, and one of the reasons the film will be unique and as great as I think it’s going to be.”
So, it’s clear that we definitely have history in the making and February 2018 can’t come fast enough!
