Awkwafina Joins ‘Crazy Rich Asians’
Known prominently for her rap music, Awkwafina is slowly infiltrating the big screen and building up her acting career. Her recent project includes being a member of the upcoming Ocean’s Eight, with an all-female lead for the comedy heist movie based on the previous heist Ocean’s Eleven movie.
Now, Awkwafina has joined the all-Asian cast for Kevin Kwan’s best-selling book-turned-movie Crazy Rich Asians. Previously announced members for this anticipated movie include Constance Wu, Michelle Yeoh, Henry Golding, and Gemma Chan.
Awkwafina is slated to play Peik Lin, Rachel Chu’s (Wu) college friend.

The film featuring an all-Asian cast follows the story of American-Born Chinese Rachel, an economics professor. Her boyfriend Nick invites her to a friend’s wedding in Singapore. There, Rachel realizes that her boyfriend is incredibly wealthy and thus is considered a desirable bachelor. Not only does she face the jealous women who want to bring Rachel down, but she also must meet her boyfriend’s family.
Currently, Crazy Rich Asians is in pre-production. The film is directed by John M. Chu and produced by Warner Bros.
