With so many movies and characters and crossing timelines in the MCU universe, it can sometimes get a little confusing about exactly where and most importantly when you are. James Gunn, director and writer of Guardians of the Galaxy, confirmed that the sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 takes place only a few months after the first film. It’s already been confirmed that at least some of the Guardians will be making an appearance in Avengers: Infinity War, so there was some slight concern over exactly when the Avengers movie would be set. That question has finally been answered: It’s four years later.

During a press event, Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, confirmed the time lapse, accounting it to James Gunn wanting to “keep the story still relatively fresh”:

“Yeah, knowing that outside of the Guardians franchise, we don’t necessarily always date the movies. You don’t always know, we don’t say, ‘2012, 2013…’ We do in the Guardians because you do the math and 1988, and it’s 26 years later. But we never say, ‘Oh, this takes place in 2018, this takes place in 2017.’ But it was important for the story that James wanted to tell that they’re still relatively fresh in their new group. With so much time between films for the team of A-Holes, it’s safe to say that the Guardians as we know them by the end of “Vol. 2” may be a bit different when “Infinity War” premieres. They will have evolved slightly, in some recognizable ways, but really they’ll be the Guardians and dealing with the s**t storm they have to deal with.”
