Next ‘Star Wars’ Movie Could be Announced in Summer

With the success of Rogue One and young Han Solo currently in production, Lucasfilm is thinking about its next Star Wars spinoff.

Since the planned Boba Fett movie has been put on hold, it’s a mystery what the franchise’s next story will be.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy recently told MTV that a decision was close and could be revealed during the summer.

“I think we’re getting close. My hope would be sometime around the summer,” said Kennedy. “I never want to predict the creative process because it is its own thing, so we’re in the midst of those discussions right now.”

Of course, the franchise is set to launch The Last Jedi in December and Kennedy had some thoughts on what comes after the current arc is finished.

“There’s no question that this is set up as a trilogy and that three-act structure of the set-up, the conflict, and the resolution very much is what we have planned,” said Kennedy.

While its Disney colleagues Marvel Studios may have their film universe planned for the next decade, Kennedy admits the Star Wars team is still figuring out its film future.

“I’m sure everybody would love for me to say, ’Oh yeah we’ve got this figured out for the next 20 years,’” said Kennedy. “No, we spend a lot of time talking, debating, watching, looking at what connects with ourselves, with the audience, all of that is a part of our decision-making. We’re asking those questions right now. We’ll make a decision soon.”

The flexible nature of its plans leaves Lucasfilm and Disney room to make story adjustments based on fan reaction to all aspects of the franchise, which is a nice change of pace for a big studio.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters Dec. 15.

The young Han Solo film is scheduled for release May 25, 2018.
