Marvel and Sony have kept many details surrounding Zendaya’s character in Spider-Man: Homecoming under wraps. Initial rumors suggested that she’d take on the role of Peter Parker’s girlfriend, Mary Jane Watson, though that may no longer be the case.
Zendaya will be playing a character named “Michelle,” who is a bit of a loner, very different from Mary Jane, according to Nerdist. In fact, her inspiration comes from some classic coming of age films:
“I always thought of her as being a version of Ally Sheedy in The Breakfast Club, what Linda Cardellini is like in Freaks and Geeks,” director Jon Watts said. “It’s just a cool character, and it’s cool for her to be that character I thought. She has a really cool wardrobe, really funny, lots of literary nods.”
Zendaya’s Michelle seems to be going for a darker, relaxed look, and is seldom seen without a stack of textbooks. The first Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer showed that Michelle has a snarky attitude, but she still manages to find her way into Peter’s friend group, which should be fun to see this July.
