‘Venom’ Will Not Be Part of the MCU

With news circulating that Sony is planning its own universe of Marvel movies, Marvel is looking to make it clear that Sony’s films are not at all connected to Disney’s super popular Marvel Cinematic Universe.

While promoting Spider-Man:Homecoming, director Jon Watts was asked about Venom.

Venom is not connected to the Marvel world, so that’s really intriguing… what that will be,” said Watts. “I don’t know anything about it. It’s not connected, so there’s not that overlap. I’m only focused on my movie right now.”

Venom is an alien parasite that first attached itself to Peter Parker. Having gained powers equal to Spider-Man, it was able to use his powers in other hosts.

Since Sony’s film will have no connection to Spider-Man, it’s a mystery of how the Venom character will be introduced.

Spider-Man-Civil-War-Shield

In Captain America: Civil War, Peter Parker/Spider-Man, played by Tom Holland, entered the MCU.

The studio has said the film will be R-rated and more sci-fi/horror film than comic book movie. This change in tone from the comedic, family friendly adventures of The Avengers will certainly help Sony set its franchise apart from all the other comic book movies out there.

Venom is scheduled for release October 5, 2018.

Spider-Man: Homecoming flies into theaters July 7.
