R.J. Cyler delivered a great performance in this weekend’s blockbuster, Power Rangers.  Aside from a six-movie plan the studio has for Power Rangers, Cyler can add the role of Rudell Curry, a drug dealer in the upcoming drug-crime drama White Boy Rick to his resume.

R.J. will star alongside newcomer Richie Merritt as Ricky Wershe Jr.and Matthew McConaughey as Ricky’s father, Richard Wershe Sr. Directed by Yann Demange, the film takes place in 1980’s Detroit and is a retelling of the real life story of Ricky Wershe Jr. who, before becoming a major drug dealer, was an undercover informant at the young age of 14. Here’s what a press release from the movie had to say about the story:

“[Takes place] at the height of the crack epidemic and the War on Drugs, and tells the moving story of a blue-collar father and his teenage son, who became an undercover informant and later a drug dealer, before he was dropped by his handlers and sentenced to life in prison,”

The screenplay was written by Logan & Noah Miller. Joining Cyler & McConaughey will be Jennifer Jason Leigh, Rory Cochrane, Brian Tyree Henry, Bruce Dern and Piper Laurie. Primary shooting will take place in Cleveland through June of this year. The movie is slated to release on January 12, 2018.

Stay tuned for more info on the film and let us know your thoughts on R.J.’s success!
